Its Sports Week at the University of Mauritius… that means no lectures the whole week depending on our lecturers though..
Good time to reflect on our sports culture in Mauritius. The University has around 6 000 students i thk and out of this how many really practice some kind of sport?
Well its only a minority..always the same faces year-in year-out at the Gymnasium. Wat sports week when we get only around 15 girls to play volleyball . Nt even 3 teams ! Our faculty (FSSH) even had to lend a player to the Engineering one to be able to play a match. (team of 4 players ).
Concerning the guys, so many teams to participate in football but no real quality football. Some dont even know how to play a football game…they never heard of passing i thk!.. they just run with the ball n want to score like a kid… c’etait vilain a voir… Cud have played better than them or still if i brought the ASQB women football team…zot ti pu gagne baté bef lolz.
Maybe am being too sexist here … time to go sleep i thk !! already 1.16 a.m bt my insomnia days r back
hope i finally get tired and can sleep before 3 a.m
BTW my faculty i.e. Humanities won in volleyball women…

Congratulations Ishtiba!!! Yeah, you’re right there’s a big lack in our sports culture on campus. But this is just a continuation of the primary+secondary school mindset I guess. So it’s not really surprising that very few actually participate in the sports week. Also, there’s not much internal marketing which is done to promote the sports week though there’s been some progress…

I wish to point out here…that officially the university of mauritius may be promoting sports through this ’sports week’ but most students will agree with me, it wasn’t a week to break away from the routine university works…in fact, many lecturers already gave us our load of work some days before that week and pointing out that we will be having plenty of time during the sports week to work on the assignments and to revise. And finally, the lecturers’ will prevailed, we spent that sports week, sporting with our assignments and revision. Maybe there should be a modification to the rule that forbids any lecture to be delivered during that week, and rather state that no assignments should be given for that week along with the no-lecture!
@ Mrs Chan-Meetoo
Thanx
U r right.. This lack of interest stems from our primary-secondary education system.. Decision-makers in this country dont understand the importance of sports. Lack of political will to change things have worsen the situaiton over the years. Its high time we rethink about the sports culture in mauritius and wat kind of population we want in the future…
The politcal discourse is such:
Sports or Physical education not important/ can sacrifice it for other academic subjects, good HSC be laureates, bla bla bla BUT on seeing the high diabetes/heartt problems in the country, the same persons would say go practice physical exercises to be in good health…Too late coz no sports culture has been developed over the years! c n’est pas du jour o lendemain kon poura convaincre 1 personne de pratiquer 1 sport regulierement
Cmg back to our CAMPUS, its quite right that no real marketing is done..
@ roushdat
Smts u only need a good time management… Everyone of us has loads of assignments to submit but we have to find the time to do all the thgs we want in our life…
But like you say SOME lecturers dnt understand..maybe coz they never really did some sports in their life.. so bookish
Bt for us part timers its not a problem coz most sports activities r scheduled from 9-4. n most of our classes begins afetr 4.
too sexist?? naa.
zillion times sexist is the rite word girl.maybe u ve been to uni football pitch on the wrong day : WARZ ( my team) played on thursday 220307 n there was quality football. not all teams, i agree, but some were really good.
my team reached the final on that day n
lost to scorpion fc. U should have there. Never mind, here s another chance: Warz is playing on monday 260307 on the CNFF pitch at 14hr for the uni tournament.
@ Mrs christina
surely there s some communication probs. some lecturers have got probs too : i was surprised to see that there were classes going on during the sports week. Common ladies n gents, give us a break.
Its also worth pointin out that there were only a handful of Uni staff participatin. Y not try some sports, the sports wk is not for students only.
@ yaveen
ya I kw am too sexist smts
…maybe was there on the wrong day bt anyways
was bad football from most teams… n cheer up hope your team win this time ! Come on WARZ!!
would be nice to see our lecturers participating
Some guys participated normally there’s a staff team (volleyball men) there’s Mr Venkatasawmy from our faculty i thk n some others n even the sports officers..was a good team last year …but sports on campus ( & in the country) remains highly gendered … not more than 50 girls in whole UOM participate annually in sports activities.
Most women in this country do not want to practice sports/some exercises
Dan kelke années zot pou rod slimming tea / go for “weighless” programs/ slimming pills/ creams/ sauna-belts N the increasing slimming inventions that will cme along
warz won on penalties. we ll b playin our next match on friday.
